Vietnamese Car Brands: From Domestic Assembly to Global EV Leadership
Historical evolution of domestic automotive manufacturing in Vietnam and VinFast’s modern technological leap into global electric mobility.
Context Summary:
Vietnam's automotive journey evolved through distinct phases: early domestic prototypes like Chien Thang (1958) and La Dalat (1970s), heavy truck ambitions by Vinaxuki, and large CKD contract assembly by THACO and TC Motor. However, VinFast represents Vietnam's first automotive manufacturer to develop proprietary passenger vehicle platforms, achieve international export scale, and successfully pioneer a 100% electric transition.
1. Early Domestic Initiatives
Prior to VinFast, Vietnam's automotive landscape relied entirely on completely built-up (CBU) imports or completely knocked-down (CKD) joint-venture assembly for foreign brands such as Toyota, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. Early indigenous initiatives faced steep capital constraints, underdeveloped supplier networks, and insufficient domestic scale.
2. The Hai Phong Manufacturing Breakthrough
In 2017, Vingroup initiated the 335-hectare Hai Phong manufacturing facility featuring heavily automated stamping, welding, paint, and battery workshops powered by over 1,200 ABB robots, formally establishing Vietnam as a self-sufficient passenger vehicle manufacturer.
